A One/Two-Day Trip(s) from Boca de Tomatlan, Puerto Vallarta

For those Villa La Sirena guests with an adventurous spirit and a vehicle at their disposal, heading east from Boca de Tomatlan in a couple of hours offers a unique stay at Mayto Beach, Jalisco, one of Mexico’s most peaceful and untouched beaches.

Shy a vehicle, or wishing for a driver/host, the Villa Manager will take care of you. Besides the Mayto/Tehua visit, there are options along that journey that we will address in this blog, making it a perfect day trip from Boca de Tomatlan.

Assuming a few stops en route, it’s a reasonable schedule for a day experience to just wander and explore miles of beach in Mexico with virtually no footprints. If hiking on sand is appealing, it’s possible to go for about 7 miles without seeing a soul. This would fall into the crazy category, but maybe a mile or so, and having the magnificent view of the beach forever in front of you might be a good alternative.

Getting to Mayto Beach, Jalisco from Boca de Tomatlan

Getting to Mayto Beach offers somewhat of an adventure by itself. You must head west from El Tuito for about an hour and a half on a road with possible challenges, depending on recent weather conditions.

El Tuito is on Hwy 200 east of Boca, a scenic mountain route if you’re coming from Puerto Vallarta. It takes about 40 minutes on the descent highway from Boca. If the trip is a casual one, leave Boca in the dawn light, so your ETA in Mayto is around 9-ish. Time to have some breakfast at Hotel Mayto, a favorite stop for many visitors to Jalisco’s hidden beaches.

The road from El Tuito is paved for most of the way, except for spots under repair. There can be bumpy areas, but little traffic. Best to take it easy. Avoid the weekend as the hotel gets busy with local/El Tuito families. The Hotel has an inexpensive day pass, so you have a restroom, shower, and pool availability, a nice feature for a Mayto Beach day trip. The hotel poolside restaurant is very casual with a nice ocean view.

If hiking on the beach is not in the plan, ATV rentals are available from a local resident, perfect for exploring remote beaches in Mexico. Check with the hotel desk.

Care is advised when riding the sand, as driftwood in every imaginable shape is abundant, depending on the time of the year. Getting stuck a few miles down the beach can be challenging. Shade is non-existent, so proper attire is important, and morning hours are best for adventuring.

Tehuamixtle - The Fishing Village Near Mayto Beach

If your beach day ends early afternoon, make a stop at Tehuamixtle (Tehua for short). It is a funky little fishing village around the bend, probably a 15-minute trip.

There are a couple of lodging possibilities along the hillside to check out for a future visit. Many restaurants are set up along the small beach. Panga fishing in Tehuamixtle is available in the bay area and beyond.

Most day visitors come to dine at Cande’s Restaurant, which is on the waterfront.

It is famous among oyster lovers; they are gathered in the bay and shucked fresh on the waterfront just in front of the restaurant. Can’t get any fresher.

The restaurant is also known for its massive Parota wood dining tables, some 20+ feet long. There is a little Parota info in our blog post about keeping the original Villa La Sirena architecture. The Villa adds to its Boho flavor with Parota use.

Heading Back to Boca de Tomatlán

With an early afternoon lunch, you can head back to El Tuito, getting there about 3 or 4 pm. A nice stop is visiting Galeria Coppelia, an interesting art gallery featuring works of local artisans. See our blog post for in-depth details. That leaves plenty of time to visit a Raicilla distillery or stop at Los Pinitos bakery for some empanadas or a wood-fired oven pizza for your return to the Villa.

If you pass on the pizza, be sure to stop at Carmen’s Tacos in Los Veranos. She opens just for evening hours, starting about 6:30, so plan your trip accordingly. She is featured in our blog posting about tortillas. This will still allow your return to the Villa before sunset. Mexican highways are narrow and not illuminated, so a safer option is to avoid night driving.

Overnight Stay & Camping at Mayto Beach

Other options for your Mayto Beach adventure that would involve an overnight stay at Hotel Mayto are:

  • A day of surf fishing, the Mayto shoreline is known for Roosterfish.

  • Renting ATVs for fishing and exploration.

  • Camping on the beach, with s’mores and campfires under the stars.

Camping on the beach

The Villa can provide you with camping equipment and beach gear. You can camp closer to the Hotel at their designated camping area or move north along the beach line, still within an easy walk to the Hotel for dining, restroom facilities, or using the pool area.

Other possibilities could be:

  • A fishing adventure with a day of Mayto Beach surf fishing and a day of panga fishing from Tehuamixtle.

  • Or just a couple of days at Hotel Mayto, kicking back with beach and pool amenities.

Avoid weekends so it’s more relaxed - kinda like a Puerto Vallarta beach resort except no tourists, peaceful, right on the beach, and much cheaper.

Hotel Mayto Contact:

Other hotel accommodations are available in Mayto and Tehua, but we recommend Hotel Mayto because of its wider range of services.

Like Boca de Tomatlán, the sunsets are great, and nice beach chairs are available to hold you comfy with your drink of choice from the hotel bar - only steps away.
